AGIP Selected to Join the Arab Multistakeholder Advisory Group

CAIRO - The Arab Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Secretariat selected Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Executive Director Mr. Charles Shaban to join the first Arab IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group (AMAG).
AMAG, consists of 30 members, is mandated to prepare for and follow‐up on the first Arab IGF in Kuwait provisionally planned for on October, 2012, in close cooperation with the Secretariat, the host, with the participation of the League of Arab States (LAS) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN‐ESCWA).
All applications submitted to the IGF Secretariat were reviewed and assessed to ensure a balanced representation of all stakeholders while taking into account geographical distribution among Arab countries, the diversity of experiences, and the type of organization. Arab government nominees were accepted into the AMAG, on the basis of one member per country, of those that applied.
“The candidates were selected according to the Secretariat’s criteria mainly for having appropriate experience in the field of Internet governance and related public policy, good knowledge of the outputs of the World Summit on the Information Society Geneva 2003 and Tunis 2005, and knowledge of the global IGF process mechanisms,” Shaban said.
“Selecting AGIP within this significant advisory group ensures the Company’s constant success in this domain and the confidence of the global stakeholders of our expertise,” he added.
The Public Consultation Conference to Establish the Arab Internet Governance Forum Beirut, 31 Jan. – 1 Feb. 2012 was held under the joint umbrella of the UN‐ESCWA and the LAS. Consensus at the Conference emerged on the establishment of the Arab Internet Governance Forum (Arab IGF), a decision that was then endorsed by the 31st meeting of the Executive Bureau of the Arab Telecommunications and Information Council of Ministers (ATICM Bureau) (Beirut, 2 Feb. 2012). The Conference welcomed the offer made by the Kuwait Information Technology Society (KITS) to host the first annual Arab IGF in Kuwait in 2012, and welcomed also the offer by Egypt’s National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) to host the IGF Secretariat.
