NEW YORK, NY - The International Trademark Association (INTA) commended in a press release President Barack Obama for signing the America Invents Act into law. Hailed as the first major patent reform measure in nearly 60 years, the America Invents Act was created to help spur innovation and job growth.

“We congratulate President Obama and the US Congress for their effort over several years to reform this country’s patent law,” said INTA Executive Director Alan C. Drewsen. “Intellectual property is the backbone of our modern economy, and the new America Invents Act will assist inventors that are looking to protect their innovations and take their inventions to market.”

The America Invents Act provides the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) with the tools needed to streamline and modernize the patent filing system, as well as decrease the backlog of patent applications. It also replaces the “first to invent” system with a “first to file” system, in which patents would be registered to the first person to apply for it. This system is in line with other countries’ intellectual property offices and helps work towards the harmonization of intellectual property laws.

“The USPTO plays an important role in the successful growth of businesses across the globe,” said Drewsen. “We are pleased that they are receiving the support needed to nurture innovation and develop the world’s knowledge economy.”

The International Trademark Association (INTA) is a worldwide association of member companies and firms that support and advance trademarks and intellectual property as elements of fair and effective global commerce.
