National Intellectual Property Awards 2013 Announced in India

NEW DELHI - Thermax Engg, Triveni Turbine, Orchid Chemical and MSN Lab among winners of IP Awards for 2013, Pune-based engineering major Thermax Limited has won the National Intellectual Property Award for 2013 in the category of Trademarks, a press release by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) stated. The company provides solutions in the areas of energy and environment. The award in the Design category has been won by Bangalore-based Triveni Turbines while Chennai-based Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd has won the award in the Patents category for public limited Indian company. Hyderabad-based MSN Laboratories has won the patents award in the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) category for private sector. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has won the award for patents in R&D institute category and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has won it in the category of Indian academic institutes.

In the individual category the Patent award has been won by Mr. K U Varunny who is a mechanical engineer from the University of Madras retired as General Manager (R&D). Dr. Jose Thaikattil who is working as medical officer at ESI Hospital in Thrissur, Kerala, has won the award in the Design category. 

Constituted jointly by the Confederation and the Indian Patents Office (IPO), the National Intellectual Property Awards are given every year since the past five years and they recognize the use of IPRs as a strategic tool in commerce and industry. Comprising Rs 1 lakh in cash and a citation, the awards are evaluated on the basis of number of IPRs granted / registered, growth in IPR portfolio in the past five years, leveraging of IPRs for achieving commercial goals (valuation, licensing, launching of new products / processes associated with granted / registered IPRs), efforts for inculcating IPR culture (R&D budget, employment of human resources for R&D, collaborations with industry and universities, licensing from other sources) and contribution towards the socio-economic development of the country. 

Conferring the awards on the occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day celebrations here on Friday, Mr. Saurabh Chandra, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy Promotion (DIPP) said, purpose of IPR is to promote Innovation .He further mentioned that 7% growth in last 30 years is because of the Intellectual Property Right(IPR) contribution and that can be sustained by manufacturing. Keeping this in mind Government of India came up with the manufacturing policy and the target is to achieve 20-25%growth. 

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chaitanya Prasad, Comptroller General of Patents, Designs & Trademarks, said that the objective of this award ceremony is to encourage creators/innovators of IP who have contributed to harnessing the country’s intellectual capital and creating an eco-system that boosts creativity and innovation. 

On behalf of Thermax Engineering, the award was received by the company’s Executive Vice-President for Research and Technology, Dr. R R Sonde. Joint Managing Director Mr Nikhil Sawhny received the award on behalf of Triveni Turbine while Senior Vice-President, Process Research, Dr U P Senthil Kumar came to received the award on behalf of Orchid Chemicals. From MSN Laboratories, Chairman and Managing Director Dr MSN Reddy took the award.
