INTA President Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Brazil’s IP Office

NEW YORK - The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced in a press release has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Institute of Industrial Property of Brazil (INPI) during a high-level delegation visit to the country. INTA President Toe Su Aung and INPI President Jorge Ávila signed the agreement on behalf of their organizations on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, paving the way for closer cooperation in the field of trademarks and IP protection.
Through the partnership INTA and INPI will work together on joint programs and technical cooperation, including information exchanges and educational and training opportunities for trademark office staff and system users. The MOU has a special focus on improving trademark systems and procedures, including opposition proceedings, mediation in trademark conflict disputes and trademark protection online, and INTA will provide INPI with ongoing advice and expertise through its staff and member committees.
“This agreement formalizes the excellent cooperation INTA has developed with INPI in recent years,” Ms. Aung said. “Brazil is a dynamic market of great interest to brand owners around the world and attracts significant foreign investment. So there is no better time to build upon the trademark protection systems that underpin economic success.”
Mr. Ávila said, “Signing this agreement demonstrates our commitment to strengthening public-private partnerships for the advancement of trademarks. Together we can build a first class IP system that meets the needs of our country, its businesses, and investors.”
During INTA’s visit to Brazil, Ms. Aung also spoke at the 33rd International Congress on Intellectual Property in Rio de Janeiro on the key developments and challenges for trademark rights around the world. In addition, Ms. Aung attended a Gala Dinner to commemorate the 50th year Anniversary of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property, ABPI.
