ICANN to ag-IP-news Agency: The Four Internationalized gTLDs Will Enter into the Root of DNS Very Shortly

LOS ANGELES, CA - On Tuesday, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that the first four domains from the New Generic Top-Level Domains Program were cleared to proceed to delegation. This, according to the Corporation, marks the start of a measured roll out of new gTLDs, which are designed to expand opportunities for businesses, communities and Internet users around the world.

What is the impact of approving the first ever Internationalized generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs), all international strings written in Arabic, Russian and Chinese, on the dissemination of the Internet?
Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) will help facilitate worldwide access to the Internet. These will be the first generic Top-Level Domains that have not been in Latin alphabet characters. That historical limitation has been a barrier to Internet usage for those who speak non-Latin based languages. IDNs will foster Internet usage around the globe, and particularly in regions previously underserved by the Internet.
Was this decision taken to confirm ICANN’s commitment to be really international and not only US centric?
ICANN is a global organization and is committed to ensuring the international community is an active part of its multi-stakeholder model. IDNs are an extension of this commitment. By breaking down the barriers to Internet access, the global Internet community will have even more opportunities to contribute to ICANN's vision and have their voices heard.
When the new gTLDs will go live?
Very soon. The first four IDNs have been handed off to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for delegation and we expect that they will be entered into the Root of the Domain Name System (DNS) very shortly.
