New York, NY – The International Trademark Association (INTA) held its first Unreal Campaign student engagement session in Mexico. The Unreal Campaign is INTA’s consumer awareness program that aims to educate students about the dangers of counterfeiting and importance of trademarks.

According to the Association, the student engagement session formed part of a competition awards ceremony hosted by the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) at the Ministry of Economy in Mexico City. Entitled “Por un Mexico Original,” the competition called on university students to design posters that promote (1) responsible consumer behavior such as only buying genuine, trademarked products and (2) a culture of respect for intellectual property. Representing the Unreal Campaign were local INTA members Miguel Angel Carpio (Langlet, Carpios y Asociados, S.C.) and Gerardo Muñoz de Cote (Televisa, S.A. de C.V.). They joined IMPI Director General Miguel Margáin on stage to address the students before the awards winners were announced.

“INTA and IMPI continue to build a productive working relationship following the Memorandum of Understanding signed between our organizations in 2013,” said INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo. “It is truly fantastic to now partner with IMPI on the Unreal Campaign and bring its important message to students in Mexico. On behalf of INTA, I wish to thank Mr. Margáin and everyone at IMPI for inviting us to participate in this event.”

Upcoming Unreal Campaign events planned for 2015 include:

March 12, New York City, NY: Student engagement session in INTA offices in conjunction with the INTA’s 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing conference;
May 5, San Diego, CA: Student engagement in conjunction with INTA’s 2015 Annual Meeting;

The Unreal Campaign is INTA’s consumer awareness program that aims to educate high school students (14-18 year olds) about the dangers of counterfeiting and importance of trademarks. Unreal is a multi-year initiative that will aim to directly engage INTA members and volunteers in its effort to raise public awareness of the harms of counterfeiting and the value of trademarks. In 2014 the Unreal Campaign hosted student engagement sessions in Hong Kong SAR, China and Bogotá, Colombia, its first in Asia and Latin America.
