AMMAN – The Regional Vice President in the Middle East of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Mr. Baher Esmat stated that the number of new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) could reach 1000-1400 which imposes some technical challenges on the Corporation.

In a press conference organized today for launching the second Middle East DNS Forum March 9-10, 2015 at Talal Abu-Ghazaleh University, Esmat noted that what is reassuring is the specialized technical studies conducted by ICANN to make sure that the expansion would not affect the security and stability of the Internet.

Meanwhile, he referred to the ICANN’s strategy targeting the Middle East through three angles: capacity building, developing domain names industry in addition to Internet Governance.

The two-day venue is hosted by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org) and co-organized by both ICANN and The Internet Society (OSOC).

Organizing this Forum falls within this strategy and efforts to build bridges between the concerned parties in the region and world’s experts in the field.

The Forum consists of several topics mainly the Internet Industry in the Middle East Region, New gTLDs, International Domain Names, Update on the IANA Stewardship Transition, Supporting the Domain Name Industry in Underserved Regions among others.
