TAG-Legal Organizes a Workshop on the “Supervisory Role of Public Sector in IPR Protection”
AMMAN - In collaboration with Jordan Customs Department and the Criminal Investigation Department at the Public Security Directorate, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Legal (TAG-Legal) held a workshop entitled the "Supervisory Role of Public Sector in Intellectual Property Rights Protection”. According to TAG-Legal, the workshop aimed to disseminate the culture of the Intellectual Property in different fields of the Kingdom.

HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org), inaugurated the workshop by stating that the cooperation in organizing the workshop embodied His Majesty King Abdullah II's directions on the importance of partnership and teamwork between public and private sectors to serve the country.

“Creativity cannot thrive but under Intellectual Property protection. Developed countries always call for that as it is the way toward growth in the areas of social and economic development" he said.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh highlighted the importance of securing adequate protection for Intellectual Property in the Arab region to achieve economic and social development which, as Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh explained, is driven originally by creativity.

He pointed out that developed counties always demand stricter laws, and that the Jordanian laws keep pace with global requirements though it needs more oversight of the implementation and of the development of more deterrent legal provisions under which sanctions are consistent with the damage and the abuse.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh added that he is proud of the Organization’s achievements in Intellectual Property protection as a leader in this field, and confirmed its willingness to contribute persistently to the development of intellect protection and regulating laws in the region to be a model around the globe.

Moreover, he stated how international conferences always call for stricter internal regulations as a mean to achieve growth and development, expressing his satisfaction of current laws in Jordan which he described as meeting international standards. However, he called for more control and inspection in this regard, and the need to amend some existing penalties on infringement offenses to be more deterrent.
He also stated that TAG-Legal has a database which includes all the provisions of the courts at the neighboring countries with respect to Intellectual Property and that it is fully ready to put this base at the disposal of the judicial system.

For his part, Head of the Department of Intellectual Protection in the Criminal Investigation Department, Major Nart Sharkas, stated that the Department was established in 2008, aiming to protect intellectual property through cooperation with various governmental and private entities including Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization. He also pointed out that the major obstacles to the Department work include the failure of trademarks owners to submit complaints along with the delayed respond or the failure of the official bodies to respond to correspondences.

On the other hand, Head of the Department of Intellectual Protection at Jordan Customs Department, Major Ahmad Al-Shyab, stressed that the Department seeks to amend the article related to the legal duration of the correspondences with the legal representative to be eight days instead of 10, which will provide more protection.

At the end of the workshop, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh presented shields and certificates to attendees.
