‘Abu-Ghazaleh-Forum’ Hosts ‘Innovation in Intellectual Property and Patents’ Workshop

AMMAN – For the benefit of faculty members and University students, the Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) organized a workshop on ‘Innovation in Intellectual Property and Patents Program: from Application to Registration’ under the patronage of HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh. 

The workshop aimed at introducing the participants from the Yarmouk, Petra, Al-Hussein Technical and German Jordanian Universities to the concepts and procedures of registration and filing relating to IP 
During the opening, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh welcomed the attendees stressing the importance of keeping abreast with technological advancements in the world of knowledge since they have become the cornerstone for wealth creation and national income of countries. 

Dr. Muafaq Al-Otoum, Assistant Professor at the Yarmouk University, said that the workshop comes as a part of the European Union’s “BITTCOIN-JO” funded project, which strives to establish Technology Transfer Offices at the Jordanian universities: partners in the project.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mohammad Al Jaghbeer, head of Organizations and International Agreements at the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Supply/ Industrial Property Directorate, presented an Introduction on Intellectual Property, highlighting definition and types. He explained in detail the procedures for registering trademarks and patents in addition to the role of the competent authorities in charge of protecting IP rights in the Kingdom along with the IP conventions, treaties and international organizations. 

Additionally, Eng. Jamil Alkhatib, founder of Ibtikar for Innovation & Technology Management Company, presented a two-day training lecture on ‘Supporting Innovation in IP’ talking in detail about innovation and its types, its importance and how to face obstacles, in addition to innovation stimulus. He also presented practical training.   

Furthermore, Mr. Raed Abu Mtair, IP Senior Officer at Abu-Ghazaleh for Intellectual Property (AGIP), presented a two-day training lecture on ‘Patents Program: from Application to Registration’ in which he briefed the participants on the basic concepts of IP, the main IP rights and international agreements in addition to the concept of inventions, importance, obstacles, preoperational procedures, protection requirements, global application and life cycle of a patent from start to finish.

It is worth mentioning that ASIP was established in 1987 in Munich, Germany, to promote and develop Intellectual Property Right (IPRs) protection system to enhance public awareness and disseminate the effective role of IP in globalization in addition to developing and identifying effective mechanisms to support IPRs worldwide.
