‘Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum’ Hosts Member of IEC Board of Commissioners Dr. Abeer Dababneh

AMMAN – Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum (TAG-KF) hosted Dr. Abeer Dababneh, a member of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Board of Commissioners, in a virtual session to discuss ‘Women's Political Participation – Jordan Elects’, through live streaming on the Forum’s Facebook page.

During the session, Dr. Dababneh reviewed the establishment, objectives and development of the Commission, pointing out that that it was founded to ensure that parliamentary election in Jordan are conducted in line with international standards and best practices, so that citizens’ confidence in the election process and its outputs are duly restored. She added that the Commission was established in 2012 as an independent entity in charge of administering and supervising the electoral process without interference or influence from any party.

She added that the creation of the IEC, was part of wide ranging political reforms in Jordan conducted under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, noting that the role and responsibilities of the Commission have been expanded to include the municipal election administration and any other general elections according to the 2014 Constitutional amendments. 

Dababneh stressed that the Commission’s mission entails the administration of independent election through the implementation of international applicable regulations and conventions in this regard, as well as the provision of distinguished local and regional electoral services.   

Dababneh also pointed out that the IEC initiates and implements all necessary decisions and procedures that would enable it to carry out its mission in a way that conforms to fundamental values including equality, the rule of law, independence, transparency, large participation, integrity and impartiality.

She also underlined the importance of the constitutional and legal framework of the IEC, based on promoting integrity with the aim of conducting free, fair and credible elections. In addition, Dababneh indicated the importance of openness to partners in the electoral process including civil society institutions and their contributions to the success of electoral process at all stages.

Dababneh called on all citizens to fulfill their constitutional duty toward the country by electing their representatives to the Lower House, highlighting at the same time the importance of youth and Jordanian women’s participation in the political life whether as volunteers, candidates or voters, noting that the number of young volunteers who will participate in the next election exceeded 17.000 young men and women from all the governorates in the Kingdom. 

A Royal Decree was issued to hold election to the 19th House of Representatives in accordance with the provisions of the law. Accordingly, the IEC announced the election will be conducted on November 10, 2020. 

The session with Dr. Dababneh was organized as part of a series of digital meetings and talks by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum. It was also conducted in cooperation with the 2020 awareness campaign launched by the Commission to shed light on the election law, procedures of the election process at all stages and apprise candidates of the integrity guarantees offered by the Commission to strengthen public participation in the election.
