ALICANTE - The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) completed the implementation of a new set of improvements to its Back Office system for Designs. These were implemented with the support of the European Union Intellectual Property Office's European cooperation projects, a press release by the Office stated.

The latest releases of the “Back Office improvements” project continue, with the automation of several examination processes. This will have the effect of reducing potential delays and preventing errors in manual data entry. Of the many improvements, two of these especially stand out. The first is the electronic signature now used in the Design Certificate. This will increase cybersecurity, thus avoiding possible fraudulent notifications and phishing attempts. The second significant improvement is a function that now automates notifications to WIPO in the case of oppositions.

These back-office upgrades have been implemented iteratively over the last two years and were implemented within the framework of the European cooperation projects. The aim of these projects is to benefit users across the EU by providing modern, state-of-the-art tools and services for the European IP offices.
