Join ICANN’s Virtual Discussion on Internet-Related Legislation in Canada

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is pleased to announce a briefing and interactive discussion on proposed Canadian online harms legislation. This virtual event is an opportunity for stakeholders to learn more about the proposed legislation and its impact on the Internet from a technical perspective, a press release stated by ICANN.

Canada is an advocate for an open Internet within intergovernmental organizations and forums such as the United Nations' Internet Governance Forum. Its proposed legislation is similar to recent initiatives in Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, among other nations. The intent of these bills is to address harmful content posted online, including hate speech, terrorist content, child sexual exploitation, and the nonconsensual sharing of intimate images. The Canadian government held an open consultation from 27 July to 25 September 2021 to gain insights into its proposed approach to dealing with these issues.

In keeping with ICANN's efforts to make the community aware of policies, bills, and regulations that may have an impact on a single, stable, and interoperable Internet, ICANN is partnering with the Internet Society to present this virtual event.

During the session, the potential impacts of the legislation on Internet Service Providers and contracted parties (registries and registrars) will be addressed. We will also discuss how the means to implement such proposed legislation may affect the Internet's infrastructure, including the Domain Name System.
