LOS ANGELES - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced the formation of a Generation Panel to develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules (RZ-LGR) for the Thaana script. This script is used for writing the Maldivian language known as Dhivehi, a press release stated by ICANN.
Following ICANN's Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules, the Thaana script community submitted a Proposal for Generation Panel for Thaana Script Label Generation Ruleset for the Root Zone. The ICANN organization reviewed the proposal, including panel composition and scope, to ensure that requirements set forth in the LGR Procedure and the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules are fulfilled.
With its composition and work plan approved by ICANN, the Thaana script Generation Panel will now start its work on the label generation rules. The full specification of the Generation Panel's tasks can be found in the LGR Procedure.
The current Root Zone LGR version 5 covers the following 26 scripts: Arabic, Armenian, Bangla, Chinese (Han), Cyrillic, Devanagari, Ethiopic, Georgian, Greek, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji [Han]), Kannada, Khmer, Korean (Hangul and Hanja [Han]), Lao, Latin, Malayalam, Myanmar, Oriya, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, and Thai.
