RIYADH - In a momentous event hosted by Saudi Arabia, the “Riyadh Design Law Treaty” was formally adopted during the Diplomatic Conference on Design Law Treaty, held at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center. Representatives from member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) convened to establish a legal framework that enhances designers' rights and facilitates the protection of their creative works, a press release stated by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP).
The Riyadh Design Law Treaty reflects Saudi Arabia’s vision of fostering international cooperation in the creative sector and its leadership in shaping a sustainable future for designers and innovators. The negotiations successfully culminated in a global agreement that marks a significant milestone in unifying procedures for registering designs globally. Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Suwailem, CEO of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, stated: “The name ‘Riyadh Treaty’ reflects Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role as a bridge between cultures and a hub for supporting global initiatives. The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) hosted the Diplomatic Conference to Conclude and Adopt a Design Law Treaty in Riyadh from November 11 to 22, 2024, with participation from WIPO’s 193 member states and high-level representatives and decision-makers in attendance.
