Unleash the full power of patent data

MUNICH - The European Patent Office (EPO) officially released its Technology Intelligence Platform (TIP) to the public during the Patent Knowledge Forum. In this new series, we will explore TIP and reveal insights to help you unleash the power of patent data, a press release stated by EPO.

TIP is a next-generation tool for processing, analyzing and visualizing patent data. It enables researchers, businesses, innovators and everyday users to conduct advanced patent data analysis and gain insights that enable them to make informed decisions. Developed with user-friendliness in mind, TIP is browser-based and offers free access to the EPO’s high-quality data, including EP full-text and PATSTAT.  The platform’s extensive computational resources enable users to analyze, process and integrate patent data with other sources.

Showcasing TIP’s capabilities

The launch featured a live demonstration to help familiarize users with TIP’s interface and potential applications. During this demonstration, TIP was used to analyze the evolution of patented technology fields over time. While users of PATSTAT are already familiar with extracting such data, TIP elevates the experience by leveraging Jupyter Labs—a gold standard for data analysis. TIP users can use the entire Python ecosystem, leveraging third-party libraries to retrieve and process patent data.

With powerful visualization options, TIP enables experts to create structured presentations of analyzed data. These help policymakers, businesses and researchers identify trends, allocate resources effectively and make informed decisions.

Expanding access to knowledge

The notebook used in the live demonstration is available in the dedicated GitHub repository linked below, empowering users to replicate the analysis or adapt it for their own needs.

This Patent Knowledge News article is the first in the series exploring the diverse applications of TIP in patent data analysis. Each instalment will spotlight a specific study, showcasing TIP’s versatility and the depth of insight it can provide. All featured studies will be accessible via the GitHub repository, ensuring that users benefit directly from these practical examples.
