EGIPA Head Affirms Commitment to Strengthening Copyright Protection

CAIRO - Chairman of the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority (EGIPA) Mr. Hisham Azmi reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to enhancing copyright protection and developing the national creativity system as part of the National Intellectual Property Strategy launched under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, according to the official website of the Egypt’s State Information Service.

Mr. Azmi made the remarks during his participation in the regional meeting of heads of copyright offices in Arab countries, according to a press statement issued by EGIPA on Saturday 29/11/2025.

The meeting - held in Algiers on November 26-27, is organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in collaboration with the National Office for Copyright and Related Rights (ONDA) in Algeria.

In his speech during the opening session, Mr. Azmi emphasized the importance of the role that Arab copyright offices play in supporting creative industries and enhancing regional coordination to face the challenges of the digital age, including artificial intelligence, digital transformation and content protection.

Mr. Azmi also chaired the main panel discussion themed “from cooperation to empowerment: strengthening copyright offices in the Arab World,” which discussed ways to develop institutional and legal frameworks for copyright offices, improve their organizational efficiency, activate their oversight role, enhance internal governance models, and achieve digital operational transformation within Arab copyright institutions.

The session, which was attended by representatives from various Arab countries, addressed several key issues, including how to redefine the role of copyright offices to become effective regulatory bodies in the digital environment, the legal powers required to enable these offices to perform their tasks efficiently, methods for improving organizational structures and internal governance, the requirements for digitizing procedures and services and ways to enhance the independence of offices and build trust with rights holders.

During the session, Mr. Azmi stressed that the institutional empowerment of copyright offices is the cornerstone of any Arab creative renaissance, emphasizing the need for a shared vision among Arab countries that strengthens integration and paves the way for the development of unified regional policies in the field of copyright.

The Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority submitted a request to host the next regional forum in Cairo, expected to be held in 2027.

The participating delegations praised the role played by the EGIPA in advancing Egypt’s copyright system and its efforts in supporting Arab cooperation.
