WIPO Director General Meets European Commission Executives in Brussels

GENEVA – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang met with European Commission executives in Brussels on May 26-27, 2026, to discuss intellectual property's role in Europe's competitiveness, trade, innovation and digital economy, according to the official website of WIPO.
A clear message emerged: IP is no longer merely a legal or technical issue, but central to economic growth, trade resilience and Europe's digital transition.
Key Brussels engagements:
• Met with Mr. Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, for discussions on IP, trade, economic security, competitiveness, IP-backed finance, enforcement, AI and the importance of continued support for rules-based multilateral cooperation.
• Met with Mr. Christophe Hansen, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, to discuss the role of IP in agri-food innovation and the international protection of origin-linked products.
• Met with Mr. Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, for exchanges on WIPO’s work to make IP more accessible and practical for young people, artists, athletes, game developers and creative entrepreneurs.
