LOS ANGELES - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that the ICANN Board of Directors has approved a one-time US$ 1 million contribution to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) to support its long-term sustainability, operations, and global participation, according to the official website of ICANN.

The contribution follows the World Summit on the Information Society: 20-year review (WSIS+20) process, through which United Nations Member States agreed to establish the IGF as a permanent forum.

For two decades, the IGF has been a vital platform for fostering open and inclusive discussions on Internet governance, as envisioned in the WSIS Tunis Agenda. During this time, ICANN has been engaged in and benefited from the IGF, helping raise awareness of the Internet’s unique identifier systems, how the Internet works, and matters important to ICANN’s mission and mandate.

The one-time contribution will support the work of the IGF Secretariat, including efforts to strengthen administrative stability, facilitate impactful global conversations, further capacity development, and engage developing country governments. It is intended to help the IGF plan and operate with greater predictability as it continues to serve the global Internet governance community.

A strong and stable IGF is important for effective cooperation on Internet governance. It gives stakeholders from all regions and sectors a place to exchange views, share experiences, and contribute to discussions that affect the future of the Internet.

ICANN’s support reflects its mission and strategic priorities, including its commitment to the multistakeholder model of Internet governance. The IGF plays an important role in sustaining that model by enabling governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical community, academia, and users to participate in open dialogue on important issues related to Internet governance.
