Building an “IP Silk Road” Between Korea and Central Asia - MOIP

DAEJEON - The South Korea’s Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP) of the Republic of Korea, headed by Minister KIM Yong Sun, hosted a luncheon meeting on May 20 with the ambassadors of the five Central Asian countries accredited to Korea* to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP), according to the official website of the Ministry. 

* In alphabetical order by country (English): H.E. Asset ISSENALI, Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Kazakhstan; H.E. Aida ISMAILOVA, Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic; H.E. Kirom SALOHIDDIN, Ambassador of the Republic of Tajikistan; H.E. Begench DURDYYEV, Ambassador of Turkmenistan; and H.E. Alisher ABDUSALOMOV, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The luncheon meeting was organized in advance of the inaugural Korea-Central Asia Summit, scheduled to be held in Seoul this September, with the aim of expanding IP cooperation between Korea and Central Asian countries and building a shared understanding to deliver tangible outcomes.

During the meeting, MOIP shared Korea's experience in achieving economic growth through a robust IP system and emphasized that closer IP cooperation with Korea could serve as a catalyst for Central Asia's next stage of development. MOIP also called for support for strengthened protection of IP rights in the countries to encourage and facilitate greater investment and business activities by Korean companies into the region.

Minister Kim Yong Sun stated, "Cooperation in the IP field between Korea and Central Asia, a region emerging as a strategic hub with abundant natural resources and significant geopolitical advantages, will become a new engine for innovation-driven growth for both regions." He added, "We look forward to achieving tangible outcomes at the inaugural Korea-Central Asia Summit this September, such as a signing of a memorandum of understanding on comprehensive cooperation in the field of IP."
