USPTO Announces Madrid e-Filing as the New Platform for International Trademark Filings

ALEXANDRIA - The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced it will transition outbound international trademark filings from the Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS) to the Madrid e-Filing system (Madrid e-Filing), the secure filing platform operated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and used by intellectual property offices in more than 40 countries, according to the official website of USPTO.
This transition will give USPTO customers a more efficient and streamlined way to file international trademark applications. Madrid e-Filing is designed specifically for international application-related filings under the Madrid Protocol and is expected to improve the overall customer experience by reducing filing errors, introducing a secure communication system for corrections during the certification process, and helping international applicants resolve issues quicker. The platform also may reduce the need for formal denials of certification and subsequent petitions related to those decisions.
Between now and September 30, applicants may continue to file international applications through TEAS or start using Madrid e-Filing. Beginning October 1, 2026, Madrid e-Filing will be the sole platform for filing initial international trademark applications based on U.S. applications and registrations. To use Madrid e-Filing, applicants must create a WIPO account.
“We’re pleased to offer Madrid e Filing as a convenient way to file international trademark applications,” said Acting Trademark Commissioner Dan Vavonese. “It will help applicants save time, communicate more easily about issues, and complete filings with less risk of error.”
The USPTO has also issued a final rule updating its regulations relating to Madrid Protocol filings. The rule replaces specific electronic filing system names with more general terminology to support this transition. In addition, the agency has published a Federal Register notice officially designating Madrid e-Filing as a platform for these filings.
