Policymakers, intellectual property (IP) experts and representatives of the financial sector gathered on September 7, 2026, at the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City to discuss how IP can help drive innovation, attract investment and support business growth in Mexico and Latin America.
MEXICO - The event, hosted by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), marked the launch of Mexico’s Journey, the latest report in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Unlocking IP-backed Financing – Country Perspectives series. Developed by WIPO in collaboration with IMPI, the report is based on interviews with representatives from government, financial institutions, industry, research organizations and the IP ecosystem, and examines the conditions and practical pathways for advancing IP-backed financing in Mexico. The report will be published shortly in English and Spanish, according to the official website of WIPO.
The presentation of the report and its key findings set the stage for a broader dialogue among representatives from financial institutions, investment funds, businesses, startups, public institutions and the wider IP and innovation ecosystem.
Unlocking the Potential of IP-Backed Financing
Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General of WIPO, highlighted the potential of IP to support access to finance:
“Mexico has significant intellectual property assets with the potential to become an increasingly important source of value, investment and business growth. Building stronger connections between the IP and financial ecosystems can help unlock this potential, opening new pathways to finance for innovative businesses and enabling intangible assets to play a greater role in Mexico’s economic development.”
Vidal Llerenas Morales, Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), emphasized the importance of recognizing IP as an economic asset:
“Intellectual property should be recognized not only as a right to be protected, but also as an asset that can generate value and facilitate access to financing. Patents, trademarks, designs, and other intangible assets can help connect those developing innovations with the resources they need to bring their projects to market.”
The launch forms part of WIPO’s broader work to strengthen IP financing ecosystems. Mexico’s Journey highlights how stronger connections across Mexico’s innovation, IP and financial ecosystems could help translate the country’s existing strengths into new financing opportunities for innovative businesses.
