GIZA - Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), participated in the opening of the 5th Arab Intellectual Property Conference, held under the title “The Impact of Protecting Intellectual Property Rights on the Healthcare Sector in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” The conference aimed to discuss developments in intellectual property rights protection and their impact on the health and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as to explore opportunities to leverage modern technological advancements in supporting innovation, research, and development, according to the official website of EDA.
The opening ceremony was attended by H.E. Ambassador Dr. Nasser Al-Qahtani, Director General of the Arab Organization for Administrative Development – League of Arab States; Major General Dr. Abdul Quddoos Al-Obaidli, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Intellectual Property Association and President of the Arab Intellectual Property Federation; Prof. Dr. Adel Abdel Aziz Al-Senn, Advisor to the Arab Organization for Administrative Development; Prof. Dr. Hisham Mahmoud Azmi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Authority for Intellectual Property; and Dr. Toshio Fukuda, Vice President of the Egypt-Japan University for Scientific Research, alongside an elite group of experts, specialists, decision-makers, and representatives of relevant entities and institutions in the fields of health, pharmaceuticals, intellectual property, and law from Egypt and Arab countries.
In his speech, Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy emphasized the importance of convening the conference amid the rapid developments in innovation and pharmaceutical research and development. He highlighted the promising opportunities offered by artificial intelligence technologies in drug discovery and the development of pharmaceutical formulations, technologies, and medical solutions, noting that such developments require keeping pace through advanced legislative and regulatory frameworks, as well as strengthening coordination among entities concerned with intellectual property and healthcare.
The Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority explained that protecting intellectual property rights constitutes a fundamental pillar for creating an environment that supports innovation, investment, and scientific research. He stressed the importance of achieving a balance between protecting intellectual property rights and encouraging innovation, in a manner that supports the development of pharmaceutical industries, contributes to equitable and sustainable access to medicines, and strengthens the foundations of pharmaceutical security.
He also noted the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment, within the scope of its mandates, to keeping pace with legislative and technological developments related to intellectual property and enhancing cooperation and coordination with relevant authorities, thereby supporting the development of the pharmaceutical industry ecosystem and leveraging the potential offered by modern technologies.
In this context, Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy highlighted the importance of cooperation with the Egyptian Authority for Intellectual Property to leverage patent information and related data. This contributes to exploring local manufacturing opportunities, supporting the localization of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, strengthening national capabilities in research and development, and enhancing the capabilities of professionals working in fields related to intellectual property and the pharmaceutical industry.
The Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority commended the Arab participation in the conference, emphasizing that the exchange of expertise and experiences and the strengthening of regional partnerships represent key pillars for developing legislative and regulatory frameworks related to intellectual property, as well as supporting innovation, research, and development in the health and pharmaceutical sectors.
Furthermore, he affirmed the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment to continuing cooperation with institutions and entities concerned with protecting intellectual property rights and developing partnerships that support technology localization and strengthen manufacturing and research capabilities. This contributes to enhancing the competitiveness of the Egyptian pharmaceutical industry and opening new horizons for investment, innovation, and cooperation at both the regional and international levels.
The conference comes as part of ongoing efforts to promote Arab dialogue on intellectual property issues and the implications of technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence, for the healthcare sector. It also seeks to explore ways to support innovation and protect intellectual property rights in a manner that serves Arab health systems and economies, enhances pharmaceutical security, and supports Egypt’s position as a regional hub for pharmaceutical industries.
