NEW YORK - The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced the appointment of Megan M. Carpenter as Senior Advisor, Global Innovation, Leadership, and IP, according to the official website of INTA.

In this role, Ms. Carpenter will support INTA’s efforts to advance education, thought leadership, and advocacy related to intellectual property (IP), artificial intelligence (AI), innovation, and emerging technologies. She will work with the Association’s Knowledge and Development Department on curriculum and educational programming in these areas, with a focus on supporting members’ AI literacy, facilitating engagement among executive IP leaders, and the development of forward-looking programming on cutting edge and next-generation technologies.

A lawyer and scholar with 25 years of experience at the intersection of IP, innovation, and emerging technologies, Ms. Carpenter is Professor of Law at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, a leading center for IP education, where she served as Dean from 2017 to 2025. As Dean, she launched a hybrid J.D. in Intellectual Property, Technology, and Information Law—the first program of its kind—which now serves working professionals in more than 40 states and internationally and received a Bloomberg Law Legal Innovator award. She previously served as founding director of the Center for Law and Intellectual Property at Texas A&M University School of Law and practiced IP law at Kirkpatrick & Lockhart (now K&L Gates).

Ms. Carpenter chairs the Rules and Practices Committee of the AI Policy Consortium for Law and Courts, a joint initiative of the National Center for State Courts and the Thomson Reuters Institute (TRI); the AI Strategic Workgroup of the Law School Admission Council; and the Global Innovation Index Task Force of the Asociación Interamericana de la Propiedad Intelectual (ASIPI), which focuses on innovation ecosystems across Latin America. She also serves on the advisory board of TRI’s Future of Law Practice initiative and the board of the U.S. Intellectual Property Alliance. She has published more than 30 works on IP, AI, innovation, and leadership, and is currently writing a book on how geographical indications and IP frameworks protect the identity of place as the climate shifts, with a focus on the wine industry.

An INTA volunteer for two decades, Ms. Carpenter has held leadership roles across the Association, including as Chair of the Academic Committee and North America Chair of the Unreal Campaign Committee, and has served on the Programming Advisory Council and the Presidential Task Force on Brand Restrictions.

“INTA is committed to helping IP professionals navigate a rapidly evolving environment shaped by AI, technological innovation, and new forms of global collaboration,” said INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo. “Our members need forward-looking education, practical resources, and informed advocacy. Megan’s distinguished career, international perspective, and leadership in IP, innovation, legal education, and AI make her exceptionally well positioned to help advance INTA’s strategic priorities and support our global community.”

“AI isn’t one more technology to keep up with. It’s changing how we invent, what we create, and when new ideas reach the market, from the creative economy to deep science. That makes it more important than ever to remember why IP matters,” said Ms. Carpenter. “Our work is no longer only about protecting and enforcing rights; it’s about helping organizations turn ideas, brands, and trust into innovation and growth. After twenty years with INTA as a member and volunteer, I’m excited to help this community lead that shift in this new role.”

Through this appointment, INTA will further strengthen its ability to address emerging opportunities and challenges at the intersection of IP, AI, innovation, and professional development while continuing to serve the needs of its global membership and broader stakeholder community.
