ALICANTE - The Portuguese intellectual property (IP) community and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) came together for the second edition of the ‘National Days at the EUIPO’ initiative to discuss developments in the Portuguese IP landscape and strengthen EUIPN cooperation, according to the official website of EUIPO.

Following the launch of the initiative with Germany in June 2026, the second edition brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from the Portuguese IP Community. Participants included the President and other representatives of the Portuguese National Institute for Industrial Property (INPI), alongside professionals from the Portuguese innovation, business, IP, judiciary, academic and enforcement communities.

Addressing country-specific priorities and celebrating Portuguese heritage

Following the opening remarks, the event kicked off with strategic updates, including the activities and implementation of the EUIPO Strategic Plan SP2030 and developments and priorities from INPI Portugal. A series of thematic roundtables provided an opportunity to exchange views on issues particularly relevant to the Portuguese IP community, such as legal practice and case law, enforcement, IP-backed financing and craft and industrial geographical indications (CIGIs). The discussions held during the roundtables were complemented by demonstrations of EUIPO's AI-powered tools and a visit to the CIGIs room, providing participants with practical insights into the Office's innovation capabilities.

The discussion on CIGIs was particularly timely considering Portugal’s recent adoption of national legislation implementing the new EU framework for the protection of CIGIs. The importance of this new CIGI framework was highlighted during a special moment dedicated to the Lenços de Namorados do Minho. The traditional embroidered handkerchiefs were the first Portuguese craft product to benefit from recognition under the new EU system for CIGIs. Portugal has submitted the highest number of CIGI applications since the new system began operating on 1 December 2025.

The National Days at the EUIPO initiative provides EU Member States with a dedicated opportunity to discuss matters of national relevance with EUIPO experts and stakeholders, while supporting knowledge sharing and identifying areas for closer cooperation. It contributes to the EUIPO’s wider objective of fostering a more connected EUIPN community and further improving the services delivered to IP users.
