AMMAN - Under the patronage of HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum, in cooperation with the Peace Knights Society, organized a panel discussion entitled “Narcotics and Their Negative Effects on Individuals and Society” hosting Brig. Gen. Anwar Tarawneh, Anti-Narcotics Department Director.
The session included the launch of a new project called 'Waee (Aware): Youth are the Defensive Shield of our Homeland', which aims at fighting negative trends and phenomenon in society and promoting the culture of awareness and positive thinking, as well as fighting violence and extremism in cooperation with the Anti-Narcotics Department and in partnership with TAG-Knowledge Forum.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh underlined the crucial role and efforts exerted by the Department and its security officers and highlighted the importance of their role in safeguarding people from the ills of society, pointing out that the most important issue is to protect youth, as they are the most vulnerable category facing the dangers of illicit narcotics.
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh called on all related stakeholders to address  society, mainly the youth, using digital communication tools, as they are faster and the best means for reaching out to the youth, and stressed the importance of benefiting from such platforms for disseminating awareness about the dangers of narcotics.

During the event, Tarawneh underscored the high level of concern and attention the Jordanian State has dedicated to enhancing the fight against illicit narcotics, referring to the regular visits made by His Majesty King Abdullah II to the Public Security Directorate,  and the priority he has placed on this important issue Regarding the Waee project, Tarawneh stated that society needs more awareness campaigns and efforts to combat this disease which can only be achieved through combined efforts and force.

He affirmed that the narcotics problem and drug abuse is not a phenomenon in Jordan and is within normal levels compared to the population.

Tarawneh noted that Jordan was ranked 2nd globally in the Operations Category in its fight against narcotics, adding that studies indicated a 60% decline in the number of apprehended users of synthetic  cannabis (known locally as "joker") in the first six months of 2017 compared to the same period last year which has been attributed to  awareness by  Jordanian society and the efforts of the Department in fighting and confiscating this drug.

He also commended the joint efforts conducted by the state’s institutions particularly the Jordan Armed Forces, General Directorate of Gendarmerie, Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, as well as civil society institutions which work relentlessly to raise awareness on the dangers of such illicit drugs.
